The training for an orthodontist is eight years at university. So there’s a lot involved in getting the education to become an orthodontist. In addition, a lot of knowledge is gained over the years as you experience treating and straightening teeth. Ultimately, with a more experienced practitioner, you have the peace of mind of less or no mistakes, and have a simple, quick and effective treatment.

With myself, not only have I been practising orthodontics for over 20 years, I’ve also been invited to lecture at conferences in Australia and overseas to talk about treating growing patients, teens, and children, and give back some of that knowledge and information that I’ve been able to gain over the years.

These days, artificial intelligence does a lot of the initial planning, however, it is far from perfect. A cheaper treatment could mean they are relying more on the computer generated treatment plan. When you see an orthodontist, they have to carefully assess your teeth, evaluate your photos and examine your x-rays. From there, they will orchestrate the movement of your teeth. Which one moves first, which one moves second, how much to rotate and when so your teeth move harmoniously together. There’s a lot of expertise involved in identifying potential problems and then working out how your teeth can be straightened most effectively.

To plan adequately and thoroughly can take several hours. However, a well planned treatment will ensure the patient gets the best and quickest outcome. So, the more time that’s spent in the planning phase, the more successful is the treatment.

It’s important that sufficient time is allocated for each patient so they are never rushed. Time is invested not just at the initial consultation, but also throughout the course of their treatment.
