Signs your child may need braces (and what to do next)

As a parent, it’s natural to wonder whether your child’s smile is developing as it should. While some changes in baby and adult teeth are completely normal, there are certain signs that may point to a need for orthodontic treatment - either now or down the track.

At Allstar Orthodontics, we’re here to help you understand what to look for, when to take action, and how orthodontic care can support your child’s growing smile.

Why early orthodontic assessment matters

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic check-up by the age of 7. This doesn’t mean braces are needed at that age - in fact, many kids don’t begin treatment until their early teens. But an early assessment allows a Specialist Orthodontist to monitor jaw development and tooth eruption, and step in at just the right time if early intervention could help.

Early treatment (also known as Phase 1 treatment) can reduce the need for more complex care later, guiding the jaws and teeth into better alignment while a child is still growing.

Common signs your child may need braces

Here are some of the most common things parents notice - and what they might mean for your child’s smile development:

1. Crowded or overlapping teeth

If your child’s teeth appear too close together or are overlapping, it may be a sign there isn’t enough space in the jaw. Orthodontic treatment can create space, align the teeth, and reduce the risk of future dental issues.

2. Gaps between teeth

On the flip side, large gaps between the teeth - especially when adult teeth are coming through - can be a sign that alignment support is needed. Some spacing is normal, but significant gaps may need evaluation.

3. Early or late loss of baby teeth

Children usually start losing baby teeth around age 6. If they lose teeth very early or very late, it can affect how adult teeth come through. An orthodontist can assess whether the timing is impacting jaw or bite development.

4. Difficulty biting or chewing

If your child complains about chewing or has trouble biting into food, it may point to a misaligned bite - such as an overbite, underbite, or crossbite - which can often be corrected with orthodontics.

5. Mouth breathing or snoring

While not always linked to orthodontics, mouth breathing and snoring can be connected to jaw positioning or narrow arches. An orthodontic assessment can help determine if early treatment could support better airway development.

6. Thumb-sucking or dummy use beyond age 4

Persistent habits like thumb-sucking or dummy use can affect the position of the front teeth and shape of the palate. Even if the habit has stopped, a check-up can ensure it hasn’t impacted your child’s bite.

7. Speech difficulties

Sometimes, problems like lisps or difficulty pronouncing certain sounds are caused by jaw or tooth positioning. A collaborative approach between an orthodontist and speech therapist may be helpful.

8. Teeth that don’t meet properly

If your child’s teeth seem to stick out, meet unevenly, or don’t touch when they bite down, this could suggest a bite problem that may benefit from early correction.
